What is the difference between Promis/Gavel and MCCS?

PROMIS/GAVEL

Promis/Gavel is a case management system used by the federal court system to track and manage criminal cases. It is used by federal courts to manage everything from case dockets and filings to calendaring and courtroom management. It allows court clerks to track potential jurors, summon them for duty, manage jury selection and track case files. The system is also designed to integrate with other government systems, such as the FBI’s Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) database and the Bureau of Prisons’ (BOP) Inmate Management System. It’s used in the federal level, cases that are handled by the US attorney office and federal agencies.

MCCS

MCCS also known as Municipal Clerk’s Cooperative System allows residents of New Jersey to obtain municipal records online. These municipal records include documents such as meeting minutes, agendas, ordinances and other records, such as your criminal record. It’s a system operated by the New Jersey State League of Municipalities,  used at the local level that helps with accessing records from local municipalities.

How can I use these systems to find my case numbers to expunge my record?

If your case was handled by the federal level, you should use Promis/Gavel to look for your case numbers, as it’s the system used to manage federal criminal cases. If your case was handled at the local level, you should use MCCS to look for your case numbers and the specific documents you may need for the expungement process. In either case, it’s always recommended to check with the relevant court to confirm that the case numbers you have located are the correct ones and to confirm the next steps for your expungement process.
